Halting gas to captive power will add 2,500MW to national grid.

ISLAMABAD: The CNG industry has submitted proposals to the government that aim to halve power outages within a week.

A letter has been sent to the petroleum secretary with suggestions to overcome the energy crisis, says a statement sent by All Pakistan CNG Association in a statement on Tuesday.

In the first proposal they suggested to stop supply of 344 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) to captive power plants that benefits only 100 to 115 individuals.

“They have alternate fuel options,” says the statement adding that 344 mmcfd of gas can be diverted to produce up to 2,000MW. These few individuals operate around the clock five days a week while other sectors suffer 12 hours daily.

The second proposal is to ban gas generators in industrial, commercial and fuel stations, a move that will save 150 mmcfd of gas and produce 700MW.

Meanwhile, all domestic gas consumers using gas costing more than Rs1,500 in the summers should also be disconnected.

Gas outages of industries in Punjab should be equalised to the CNG sector that will save 100 mmcfd extra to government to produce 500MW electricity. Gas should be provided on priority to the sectors which can’t work without gas.
