Raising awareness: Day against desertification observed
Environmental Watch Trust observed June 17 as the World Day to Combat Desertification.
ISLAMABAD:
The Environmental Watch Trust (EWT), an organization striving to make Pakistan clean and green observed June 17 as the World Day to Combat Desertification. EWT Chairperson Shumaila Javed Bhatti, said desertification, land degradation and drought threaten human security and deprive people from food, access to water and means for economic activity. She said that such problems undermine national and regional security and can trigger conflicts locally, regionally and even globally. She stated that construction of Indian Dams on Pakistani rivers would change green Pakistan into a desert. Planting more trees could fight desertification. Secretary General EWT, Azqa Sajjad said that this day had been observed since 1995 to promote public awareness on the effects of desertification and droughts.
