Eminent Lahoris among Civil Awards recipients

The official ceremony for the distribution of the awards will take place on Pakistan Day (March 23, 2011).

Several prominent Lahoris are among the recipients for this year’s Civil Awards as President Asif Ali Zardari conferred the Civil Awards on 209 Pakistani citizens and foreign nationals for excellence in various fields on Independence Day (August 14, 2010).

The official ceremony for the distribution of the awards will take place on Pakistan Day (March 23, 2011).

Lahore-based journalist Najam Sethi has been awarded the Nishan-i-Quiad-i-Azam for his services. Dr Shaukat Mahmood (Maxim) has been awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz for his services to Islamic architecture and art.

The Pride of Performance Award in the field of art has been awarded to Suhail Akram (Suhail Ahmad) for drama acting, Ustad Hussain Buksh Gullu for music, Samina Ahmad for acting, Habib for film and television and SB John for art.

Talking to The Express Tribune Najam Sethi, said that he was ‘quite happy to receive that award and be honoured’. Mr Sethi said that it was a wonderful thing that the government acknowledged journalists’ services to the nation. “I am delighted and grateful,” he said.


Dr Shaukat Mahmood, recipient of the Sitara-i-Imtiaz, said that he was very happy that his work on Islamic architecture was being acknowledged.

“I would like to mention that I didn’t meet anyone in Islamabad to try and get this award. The credit goes to the jury,” he said.

“Lahore houses exemplary architectural structures and most of my students are working on Islamic architecture and writing research books on the subject,” he said.

Recipient of the Pride of Performance award actress Samina Ahmad said, “I feel honoured that my work has been acknowledged after such a longtime.

With this award one gets the responsibility and courage to forge ahead. I feel that I have to work more and work better.”
