G-B for regularisation of supreme appellate court judges
Contracts of two of the three judges have expired.

The Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) law department is seeking to regularise the services of the Supreme Appellate Court judges, it has been learnt.
According to sources, the G-B chief secretary has prepared a summary in this regard, which he will share with the chief minister and the governor of G-B before submitting it to the Prime Minister Secretariat for approval by the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Supreme Appellate Court, the apex court of G-B, is run by three judges including the chief judge. All the three judges are hired on contract basis for a period of three years.
An official in the governor secretariat informed that the contracts of two of the judges — Justice Syed Jafer Shah and Justice Mohammad Yaqoob — expired on June 1, and it is yet to be decided who will replace them. He informed that Chief Judge Rana Arshad replaced Mohammad Nawaz Abbasi after the latter’s contract expired.
The official said that if the summary is approved, the judges’ services will be similar to those of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of Pakistan. He added that the G-B government is waiting for the Supreme Court’s decision before proposing alternate names to the prime minister for the two vacant posts of judges.

A G-B local had filed a petition in the Supreme Court last year, challenging the self-empowerment order 2009 under which the Prime Minister of Pakistan is sole authority to appoint the judges. The case is being heard by the Supreme Court.
