The Lahore High Court on Thursday sought a reply from the Ministry of Commerce on a petition challenging the appointment of the board of directors of the Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Company (PHDEC).
Justice Muhammad Yawar Ali said the board’s appointment would not be finalised until the petition was decided, and adjourned the case for three weeks.
The petitioners said that in 2009, the Ministry of Commerce issued a notification for the appointment of Bashir Hussain as chief executive of the PHDEC. They said that the appointment was illegal.
The petitioners said that the ministry and the CEO had not called a meeting of the board for two years. But on May 23, 2012, they issued a notification appointing a new board of directors. Hussain then also called a meeting of that new board.
The petitioners said that the government lacked the authority to appoint the board of directors. It asked the court to declare the notification for the board’s appointment issued by the Ministry of Commerce illegal.
