In an early morning attack, unidentified motorcyclists gunned down a policeman near the old Sabzi Mandi.
PIB Colony SHO Nusrat Hussain Sheikh said that head mohrar Sardar Ali Hassan Jamali, 40, was sitting at a teashop when two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire at him, killing him on the spot.
The victim was shot thrice in the head and neck. His body was taken to the Jinnah hospital. He is survived by his widow and four children.
Jamali was posted at the CID Civil Lines office since the department was established in 2002. Earlier, he was associated with the CID’s anti-terrorism unit.
SSP CID Fayyaz Khan said Jamali had played a major role in the investigation of numerous terrorism and criminal cases, including targeted killings.
In the Garden police limits, at least two armed men on a motorcycle shot dead a shopkeeper on Murad Khan Road.
SHO Mutahir Hussain said that 38-year-old Javed Sattar, a supporter of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, was sitting at his automobile accessories shop when he was targeted.
The officer said that another party activist, Babar, had been with Sattar only minutes before the armed men carried out the attack. “Maybe the attackers wanted to kill Babar but as he had left the place, they shot dead Sattar mistakenly,” he said.
The victim’s body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Separately, the body of an unidentified young man was found from Ahmed Shah Bukhari Road in Lyari. Kalri SHO Safdar Mashwani said that the deceased had been shot in the head after being tortured.
Grenade attack
Another supporter of the MQM was injured in an attack on the party’s unit office in Hussainabad late on Monday night. The incident had led to panic in the locality and a food street nearby was hurriedly closed down.
DSP Saleem Akhtar Hussain said that unidentified motorcyclists lobbed a hand grenade at the MQM’s unit office, injuring a party activist identified as Shahabuddin.
The Azizabad police have registered the case (FIR no. 146/12) of the attack against two unidentified suspects under sections of the anti-terrorism and explosive acts.
Raids and arrests
About a dozen suspects, including alleged target killers and gangsters, were apprehended during overnight targeted raids by Rangers in parts of Lyari, including Singu Lane and Miran Naka.
Sources in Rangers said that weapons were also recovered from the suspects. The suspects are still in the custody of the Rangers and have not handed over to the police.
Unconfirmed reports suggested that the suspects were taken into custody near the residence of Uzair Jan Baloch, the chief of the banned Peoples Amn Committee (PAC).
PAC leader Zafar Baloch confirmed the arrests, saying that the committee is in favour of crackdowns against criminal elements.
