KARACHI:

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is gearing up to construct four new flyovers at a cost of about Rs1.73 billion.

On the other hand, the construction of a flyover near the central jail has not been completed since 2009.

The bridge was part of a project called Signal-Free Corridor. A total of four flyovers were to be built under the project at a cost of Rs2.5 billion.  The other three flyovers at Nipa Chowrangi, Abul Hassan Isphahani Road and Samama Shopping Centre on University Road were completed but the one near Central Jail was left incomplete because the Sindh government did not release Rs28 million.

According to the director-general of technical services at KMC, Altaf G Memon, 40 per cent work of the Central Jail flyover has been completed and the rest was also expected to be completed soon. A request has been forwarded to the chief minister to release more funds so that work can be resumed. Memon hoped that the work will restart in a few days.

The new flyovers will be built at Water Pump and Ayesha Manzil and their cost is estimated to be around Rs494 million per flyover. Another one has been proposed at the Daak Khana intersection and that will cost around Rs472 million and the one at Teen Hatti roundabout Rs267 million.
