KARACHI: Former captain Rehan Butt became the first of the eight punished players to appeal against the fine imposed on him by the Pakistan Hockey Federation for taking part in the unsanctioned World Series Hockey (WSH).

Butt and another former captain Shakeel Abbasi were handed a fine of Rs1m each while six other players, who featured in the lucrative league in India, were handed a Rs250,000 penalty by the PHF on Tuesday.

“I’ve filed a formal appeal and have requested the PHF President to waive the fine,” Butt told The Express Tribune. “In the appeal, I’ve also assured the federation that I will take its permission before participating in such leagues in the future. I hope they accept my apology and let me off.”

According to Butt, the PHF president will make a decision which is expected to be announced in a week. It has also been learnt that the rest of the players will also appeal against the penalty.
