If you’re tired of investing in high-end beauty products and then feeling cheated when the results don’t show up, break the cycle now and head to your kitchen. We don’t even realise that our kitchen is actually an exclusive laboratory with things that can help us fight our daily beauty-related issues. Here is a list of 10 things you never knew could do so much for your looks.

1. Detangle with  grape juice

To untangle hair you need a product with a low PH. White vinegar is perfect for working through haystack hair, but it may not leave you smelling as fragrant as you’d like. Instead, use grape juice. Apply for 15 minutes, rinse well afterwards, run a wide comb through your hair and presto: silky, smooth and tangle-free locks.

2. Mayo to polish your locks

Mayonnaise combines the moisturising properties of oil with the benefits of egg protein and is a protein mask for dry, frizzy and damaged hair, according to a research on livestrong.com. Apply to your scalp, wrap your head with a towel. Leave for 20 minutes then wash out thoroughly with lukewarm water.

3. Eliminate dandruff with apple cider vinegar

The alpha hydroxy acids in apple cider vinegar kill the fungus and bacteria that may cause dandruff. After you shampoo and condition, pour half a cup of apple cider vinegar over your hair. Comb through and rinse thoroughly with water.

4. Boost shade with food colouring

A few drops of food colouring to your conditioner can enhance the colour of your dyed hair. Pinks, reds and purples add warmth and depth to your colour. We recommend testing the mix with a cotton bud to ensure there are no garish mistakes.

5. Nourish your locks with a drizzle of olive oil

Extra-virgin olive oil is a cheaper deep-conditioning treatment. Gently warm the oil by placing the bottle in a basin of hot water for a few minutes. Then apply to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, avoiding your roots as these tend to be naturally oilier. Leave for 20 minutes, then shampoo thoroughly.

6. Deep-clean oily skin with honey

Naturally antiseptic and antibacterial, honey makes a good cleanser for oily and blemished skin, says green living expert Berthold-Bond. Massage it onto clean, damp skin, pressing and releasing with your fingers for deeper cleansing. Rinse well with warm water and pat dry.

7. Fight B.O

If your deodorant isn’t helping you fight your stench demons then try wiping your body with white vinegar. You can also apply some baking soda to your sweat producing parts and it will soak up sweat and kill bacteria.

8. Lip service

To exfoliate your lips and get rid of dead skin, mix a paste of honey and sugar and rub the mixture on your lips. Then use a toothbrush to slough off the dead skin. To make an instant lip plumper, simply rub cinnamon on your lips.

9. Fight age with rice water

Asian women are admired for their beautiful, clear and flawless skin. One of their secrets to keeping their complexions smooth is washing their faces with rice water. Rice water is simply the water that comes from washing uncooked rice. This works because rice contains a high concentration of para aminobenzoic acid (PABA), which works as a sunscreen.

10. Exfoliate with coffee

Brewed dark roast can be used as a post-conditioner wash to add richness to brunette, auburn, and dark blonde hair. Instant coffee can be added to conditioner for the same effect, and plain ‘ol coffee grounds are a fantastic exfoliator. Mix with your favourite facial wash to give that face a good scrubbing.
