Advisers: Come up with a logical answer, says LHC

High court was hearing a petition filed by Advocate Rana Mehtab to challenge the appointment of advisers.

LAHORE:

When a law officer on Wednesday told Lahore High Court that advisers to the chief minister were appointed through executive orders, the court was not pleased.

Justice Umar Ata Bandial asked the officer to come up with a “logical” reply. Otherwise, he noted, “the court will decide the case according to the law”.

The high court was hearing a petition filed by Advocate Rana Mehtab to challenge the appointment of advisers.

The Punjab government was directed to tell the court what law allowed it to use the public exchequer for appointing special advisers at high salaries. The judge remarked, “The national exchequer cannot be used without any law”.

The case was then adjourned until June 21.

The petitioner has described the appointments as “unnecessary burden on the exchequer”. He has prayed that they be declared illegal and the government be directed not to make any such appointments in the future.
