Kaneria gets permission to play for Essex
PCB has given the go-ahead to Danish Kaneria to play in Friends Provident Twenty20 final for his county side Essex.
KARACHI:
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has given the go-ahead to Danish Kaneria to play in Friends Provident Twenty20 final for his county side Essex, making the leg spinner unconfirmed for the remaining Test series against England.
Essex sought assurance from the PCB about Kaneria’s availability for the event’s finals day on August 14 after his omission from the national side’s loss against England in the first Test.
PCB chief operating officer Wasim Bari told The Express Tribune that the board has sent its reply confirming the leg-spinner’s availability for the county side. Bari also added that since the leg spinner was not playing in the Test there was no need of stopping him from playing for his county side.
The confirmation means that the out-of-form leg spinner will be seen in action alongside West Indies’ all-rounder Wayne Bravo in the semi-final against Hampshire. But the veteran bowler will miss Pakistan’s two-day practice match against Worcestershire starting on August 13, and hence will fail to prove his form ahead of the third Test to be played from August 18 at the Oval.
However, a Pakistan team official said the leg spinner will be considered for the penultimate Test even if he misses the practice match ahead of the encounter.
“We will review his performance for his county team and he may be able to be part of team for the third Test without playing against Worcestershire,” the official said from Birmingham.
He maintained that the team management has not ruled Kaneria out of the whole series, claiming that they only wanted to give time to the leg spinner to regain his form.
Kaneria was replaced by left-arm former Under-19 spinner Raza Hassan after he mustered a dismal one wicket after conceding 171 runs in his side’s 354-run loss against the hosts in first Tests at Nottingham.
