Diplomatic appointment: New Australian envoy named

Australia has named Peter Heyward as its new high commissioner to Pakistan, according to a press release issued by the Australian High Commission on Tuesday. Heyward will assume the role in June, taking over from Timothy George, who has been the high commissioner since June 2009. Australia and Pakistan enjoy a long-standing friendship built on a common heritage as members of the Commonwealth of Nations. Heyward is a career Foreign Affairs and rade Department officer and was until recently Africa Branch Assistant Secretary, a position he held from June 2011. Heyward has previously served as Australia’s Ambassador to East Timor and to Brazil, while also serving as the deputy permanent representative at the Australian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva and deputy head of mission in Argentina.
