Musical evening: Cholistani folk artists, students enthral audience

Event part of inter-university consortium’s efforts to promote local culture, history.

Nomadic artists from Cholistan mesmerised audience with their sterling performance in an exclusive cultural programme held at the Higher Education Commission (HEC) auditorium on Monday evening.


Cholistani artists and the Islamia University of Bahawalpur’s dramatic club gave a lively performance on a stage adorned to reflect the culture and traditions of Cholistan. Performances were given by famous Cholistani artists, including Jamil Parwana, Naseer Mastana, Malang Hussain, and Mureed Hussain, who sang some of their renowned folk songs.

The event was organised by the HEC and the Inter University Consortium for Promotion of Social Sciences (IUCPSS), which is the first inter-university established by eight leading public universities to collaboratively strengthen social sciences, arts and humanities.

HEC Chairperson Dr Javaid Laghari, the chief guest, praised the efforts of IUCPSS and emphasised the need of such programmes to promote cultural diversity and national harmony.

“Pakistan has a rich cultural heritage and it is high time that we highlight the teaching of our saints and sufis, who preached the message of tolerance, affection, harmony and respect for human rights,” he said.

Saad Khan, the managing director of Punjab Tourism Development Corporation, gave a detailed presentation on the Cholistan Jeep Rally, while HEC Executive Director Dr Sohail Naqvi urged universities to develop close relationship with the local communities to preserve local history and culture.
