Fawad Chaudhry expresses concern on granting police access to phone data

Says such a decision would violate citizens’ right of privacy.

LAHORE:
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Fawad Chaudhry, in a letter written to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani expressed his concerns on giving police access to mobile phone data.

Chaudhry, while drawing Gilani’s attention to Article 12 of the constitution, said that such a decision would violate citizens’ right of privacy.

"Unless a comprehensive legislation is proposed, such a decision will give police the authority to manipulate," Chaudhry said.

Chaudhry further asked Gilani to take action against this decision.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik had said on March 13 that a summary was forwarded to the prime minister to grant police access to mobile phone data.

He added that ‘special equipment’ for the purpose would also be provided to police across the country to find the location of criminals and that a central crime database centre would also be set up in Islamabad.
