Hot Pursuit: Plainclothes policemen chase car, shoot doctor
Zaib Siddiqui, 48, was shot once in the leg even though she was sitting inside the car.
KARACHI:
A doctor was shot and injured by policemen’s firing outside the Garden Police Headquarters on Saturday.
Zaib Siddiqui, 48, was shot once in the leg even though she was sitting inside the car. She was rushed to a private hospital on Stadium Road where the doctors declared her out of danger.
Siddiqui’s brother-in-law, Asif, said that he was coming back home with his mother and Siddiqui when a police mobile unit with plainclothes policemen stopped their car. They beat Asif up and one of the policemen opened fire as a heated argument took place between them. Asif claimed that the police mobile came from Garden Police Headquarters.
The Garden police registered a case against five unidentified policemen on Asif’s request.
SHO Mutahir Hussain said that Dr Siddiqui used to run her own practice and there was a possibility that officials of Anti-Extremist Cell (AEC) of the Crime Investigation Department might have been behind the incident. He said that Asif will be asked to identify the AEC men and they will be arrested if found involved.
On the other hand, the AEC chief, Chaudhry Aslam Khan, said that he was ready to cooperate with the investigation. He also said that he was trying to find the men responsible for the attack and their motive.
