ISLAMABAD: On its last day, the Intra Beaconhouse Model United Nations (BMUN) 2012 simulated United Nations (UN) sessions on global and local issues.

Human rights violation took centre stage as delegates discussed how various rights should and could be protected to ensure world peace.

Foreign intervention was also discussed in the UN’s Security Council, where delegates deliberated resolutions regarding the conditions which favoured foreign intervention and the extent to which they could be implemented.

Delegates representing Pakistan leaders in the Senate deliberated on the loopholes in intelligence and security especially regarding the recent attack on Pakistan Military Academy in Abbottabad.

“We discussed issues of both national and global importance such as the relation between the NATO and USA and debated on topics such as the achievement of Millennium Development Goals till the 2015,” said 17-year-old Haider Hayat, representing Russia.

The representative committee structure included Counter Terrorism Committee under United Nations Security Council and Disarmament and International Security; Social, Humanitarian, Cultural Affairs Committee; UN High Commissioner for Refugees; Human Rights Council; and UN Development Programme under the General Assembly. Senate Standing Committee was the specialised committee.

Hayat commented, “What committee you are a part of is as important as your country as it influences your discussion topic and angle to a large degree.”

Delegates of the USA team were the winners of the best delegate poll award. The event ended with a themed dinner titled “Angels and Demons”.
