Look at the cast of characters. Apparently, there are 40 parties, from the right to the far right, reminding one of the story of Ali Baba. The main ones are Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, Jamaatud Dawa, Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat, formerly the democracy-loving Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Islam (Sami), the one-man Awami Muslim League, Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Pakistan, and veteran democrats, Ijazul Haq and Lt-Gen Hameed Napoleon Gul, retired but not fading.
So what does the DPC want? The ostensible reason for coming together is to defend Pakistan. And pray, against whom? The United States and India. That’s exactly what I also want to do. But in my case there’s a slight catch. While I’d like Pakistan to have viable interstate relations with all states in the world, in and outside the region, and to establish those relations on the basis of Pakistan’s interests defined and deliberated, I am not sure if this Council is the right platform for achieving that end. Consider.
The ASWJ, formerly SSP, is an avowedly sectarian party. From its womb was born the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a terrorist organisation that makes no bones about killing the Shia Muslims. The LJ is listed by security forces and intelligence agencies as affiliated with the hard-line, takfeeri al Qaeda group. It has attacked and killed hundreds of security personnel as well as civilians. Perhaps it would join the DPC as the 41st component since it has a certain view on ‘defending’ Pakistan.
Then we have the JIP. The JIP considers Osama bin Laden a martyr. Its leaders like Sirajul Haq and Haroon Rashid, on the testimony of army and FC high officials, are linked with the Taliban attacking Pakistani troops. One can go back and see records of what then IG-FC, now Lt-Gen Tariq Khan, told the media on a sunny day at Abbas Markaz in Bajaur. There are several other such statements. In my multiple visits to different agencies in FATA, I came across and spoke with a number of officers who told me the same tale about many local, provincial and central leaders of the party and their affiliation with the Pakistani Taliban, a declared threat to Pakistan.
Take Sami-ul Haq. His seminaries were mass-producing the Taliban. The extremist Taliban ideology has become the bane of this country. Now he is trying to defend this country.
Ah! And then we have the JuD. While its leader Hafiz Saeed has been exonerated by the courts of all charges, let’s not kid ourselves about his contributions to this country. It is one thing to look at India in and through a realist framework, but quite another to have a group that could put Pakistan in deep trouble by waging a private war on India. As it is, five people of the JuD’s militant wing are being tried for possible involvement in the Mumbai attacks. He too is out to defend Pakistan.
And of course the benign, shrine-going, liminal Barelvis. My heart goes out to them for their mysticism which has begun to manifest itself through a full metal jacket round of 7.62 mm. Their favourites are the Ahmadiyya and their hero Mumtaz Qadri. They too are out to defend Pakistan.
There are sundry other characters in this sorry circus, their sipah salar, fateh Jalalabad, Napoleon Sani, General Gul. A man of many parts, he is distinguished by the fact that most of these parts are generally out of sync with each other.
This is a Whisky Tango Foxtrot moment for the entire nation and, yes, the military and its various intelligence agencies. Is this someone’s idea of signalling? If it is, he needs to get his head checked for serious dementia. Far from this Council defending Pakistan, Pakistan needs to be defended in right earnest from this cast of characters. Already, one JuD speaker at the Karachi rally has threatened the media. How about the agencies, who post comic-looking cloak-and-dagger characters at hotels and other places in Islamabad who accost perfectly decent citizens, pick up this guy and slap the incitement to murder charge against him?
I am told Pakistan is a democracy and one can’t stop people from gathering. The twin freedoms of association and expression! Indeed! Except that there are two problems with this argument. One, many of these leaders and their parties have been involved in activities that pose serious internal and external threats to this country; two, not one of them is prepared to give the freedom of expression and association to others. Hell, they don’t even spare those Islamic scholars who have greater exegetical skills than all of them put together but have no militias to command, Javed Ghamdi being a case in point. As I have noted earlier, they have killed and would kill without remorse and in the name of Islam, much like the autos de fa of medieval Europe when “heretics” were burnt at the stake ad majorem Dei gloriam.
Even by our standards this DPC is a bit of a joke. This is a crowd that needs to be defeated at the polls and this is also a crowd that needs to be dealt with through the power of the state wherever and whenever some of them are found involved in terrorist activities. We need a DPC to save Pakistan from this DPC, its lies and its agenda.
Rumours suggest that this crowd has been put up to this tamasha by a section of the establishment. I hope that is not true. I know many senior officers who have, on multiple occasions, spoken to me about the rising threat of extremism. The military has lost too many young officers and men. It would be a scandal most scandalous if this were true. But some of the characters in this fake DPC are known to be close to the establishment. What should one think of that.

STRANGE........It seems they(DPC) are extrimist but you are...........You people are not event willing to give them chance to speak......Is this freedom?????
It seems you are the only person who is patriotic nd all others are enemies of Pakistan/......Respected ejaz who has given you this right?? to conclude this.........
It;s goood they are becoming part of political processs.....Give them right to express their voice......
We are willing to to forgive all blouch leaders(who said they do'nt want to live with pakistan),We are willing to forgive target killers in Karachi....but not to DPC....wowww greate.... Dear Ejaz please come up with some logical arguments not just your inner anger......
Writer need to be Impartial,
@aysha: Congratulations for such objective statement of facts that many in the society will not like to be reminded. But sooner or later sanity will prevail.
Extremism is decades old and state initiated. Is it not extremism to make it business of the state in 1974 to identify citizen as muslims and non- muslims. Instead of developing a societal understanding that anybody who claims to be a muslim should be considered a muslim, the state of Pakistan by way of law brought the faith of people in the public domain. Hence gave birth to a judgemental society. From there on people considered their responsibility to judge others’ belief system. First they identified people as muslims and non muslims, they then went on to judge them as good muslims and those that were not so good muslim. After having made this decision they widened the scope of their self assumed responsibility to decide the fate of those individuals who were judged as not so great muslims, and then we saw that ordinary people like Qadri and others were turned into killers, all that was started in 1974 has spiraled out of control, it is very difficult to get people to understand that an individual’s faith is his and his business alone, there is no mediator between Man and Allah, one’s faith completely and clearly cannot be considered part of public discourse.
DPC is not just a joke.... It sounds a new plan of the establishment. Some persons in DPC are a sign of caution for those who think and foresee...
@Saad Raees: One of the finest comment on your board. Every word is objective hard hitting truth and fact. I could not agree with Raees more when he says "Thses people who you consider saviours of Pakistan would have even killed almost every founding father of Pakistan because many of them were not Deobandi or Barelvi." I also know that to day when most of the people are high on emotions and being carried away by high propaganda no one will pay attention to this great comment.
@Usama: How could you say that these DPC people have always stood strong for Pakistan, when we all know that these were the very people who were against the creation of Pakistan? The All India Muslim League consisted of liberal Muslims who were actually sincere to Islam, and they came from every sect: Sunni, Shia, Aga Khani, Bori, Ismaili and even Ahmadi if you remember our first foreign minister. Our own Quaid, was a minority within a minority since he belonged to a minority sect within Shia sect. Thses people who you consider saviours of Pakistan would have even killed almost every founding father of Pakistan because many of them were not Deobandi or Barelvi. And as far as having the support of the masses is concerned, if they had any significant support in the masses, Jamaat-i-Islami and JUI would be sweeping elections and PPP would have never won any(although I truly hate PPP with the exception of few in it). Why is it that these "saviours" hardly manage to get only a few seats? And one more example of their "honesty" is their support for US in the 70s.. It was the same Jamaat that used to call US "Ahle-Kitab" and friends of Muslims as long as Americans funded them, but as soon as the friend stopped showering the blessed dollars upon them, the same "Great Ahl-e-Kitab" became the "Great Satan"
@Its (still) Econonmy Stupid
If DPC rallies are meant as a bargaining chip with USA, then Pakistan may loose even as it bargains with USA. US is a distant country that can mess around and get away. Pakistan will have to live with the implications.
Short sighted, but then we all know Pakistan army has a flawed vision.
bad too bad,its looking like U.S Spokesman, whoh so we expecting some good and muture analysis about the emergence of this group rather than attacking them blindly and trying to make them a laughing stock. Although I am proud to be in the liberal camp, it is really sorry to say that the whole article seems to designed to redecule the group.Recommended21
Bless you for mentioning Javed Ghamidi ...
I applaud your courage Sir ...
Wastage of time. If you cannot do anything for Pakistan. At least you should appreciate the ones who want to do.
You forgot the name the producers and the financers of this circus... our Generals and PetroKings, without them there would have been no blood soaked entertainment.
@Usama: When did they defend Pakistan? The Taliban have attacked Pakistan. What good idea do they have for Pakistan? They kill people who have some hopes and dreams for the country.
Great piece, Ejaz. We need more voices condemning the DPC and that it stands for.
Brilliant opening line
It is an article well written. Well done Ejaz! It must be said that even extremist factions have the right to join mainstream politics. They should be given a chance to open up. It is the duty of people of Pakistan to defeat them in the coming polls and, underline, defeat them badly. Nothing is gained by imposing ban on parties. In such a scenario they go underground. Nothing is achieved by bottling up sentiments. Let the emotions outflow. These elements should and can be defeated by logic and reasons. By ballot and not by bullet. REJECT THEM IN POLLS.
Excellent article! It doesn't beat about the bush and exposes the DPC for the travesty which it is by simply pointing out the shady characters who are its protagonists. There are some who mistakenly suggest that the DPC must be popular, otherwise it wouldn't be able to gather tens of thousands of demonstrators at its rallies. I would respond that fascist organizations are usually quite good at gathering up every bigot within miles to attend their rallies. Many thousands of demonstrators used to attend Mussolini's rallies. Yet, it quickly became clear that a significantly larger silent majority despised his ideas and his tactics. I would suggest that a similarly large silent majority despises the DPC and the slimy individuals who represent its leadership.
"Rumours suggest that this crowd has been put up to this tamasha by a section of the establishment. I hope that is not true." Can't you see, Sir! How else can such brilliantly evil minds come together? By the way I thought PTI is also courting DPC.
Sell-offs on one side and DPC on the other - Devil and the deep blue sea. May God save our beloved country.
@Anjum Amin Siddiqui: "If my memory serve right Talibans were created during secon tenure of Benazir by her able Interior Minister Naseerullah Babar. So the history tells us that PPP was the main culprit very amuzing."
And Naseerullah partook in parleys, with Northern Alliance as the Taleban representative. Let's not turn history into a pack of lies.
Very brave and well written. we need more journalist/writers like you in urdu language as well so that they can give a better picture of these terrorist organizations to the ppl of pakistan who don't read englis papers. But anyhow very good article.
If my memory serve right Talibans were created during secon tenure of Benazir by her able Interior Minister Naseerullah Babar. So the history tells us that PPP was the main culprit very amuzing.
Every society has irresponsible elements and Pakistan is no different. Its the critical mass of such people which decides the fate of any society. I am sorry to say that the critical mass in Pakistan is too high to be controlled. Situation is like the chain reaction in a nuclear reactor. Moderating and cooling forces are too weak and chances of exploding are very high. Its a red alert situation now.
Dear Mr. Haider,
While this group seldom rises as a major force at the polls, their ideology is one with which a large segment of the population sympathizes. Your suggestion of the state dealing with them forcefully is idealistic to say the least, and anything of the sort would mean an upsurge in popularity where it really matters. Need I mention the electoral repercussions faced by Musharraf following his clampdown on the Lal Masjid militants? The solution Sir, boils down to education: educate the masses so that they can make informed and educated decisions for themselves (which theoretically should dry up the support these jahil of jahils enjoy)
With due respect to Bukhari sahib, I hardly find the real Ejaz Bukhari in it but a strong reflection of a "JIALA".
@Asam Baloch:
Agreed when you say everyone should be given a fair review.... Unless of course they are known/convicted sectarian or hate based organizations....
This entire group is good enough if they collectively (and to begin with) take the responsibility of cleaning the country for a start. What's the harm in it? After all we know "safaee nisf eiman hay". Then as a religious organization it becomes their duty to teach their 'followers' to clean the entire country. Don't we know how poor our hygiene and sanitation is? One by one this group can then take up "work ethics" and then "business ethics" into their fold and work on these issues. They can win hearts and that is true jihad. Any moulana interested to work for the nation instead of arising animosity against the nation in the international media and minds.
@An ex Army General, Mumbai:
Suddenly, "in midst of tsunami" IK has started sending wrong signal to the world...He must understand that whole world is watching him very closely. In fact, we Indians have also got great expectations from him... I think he could have avoided sending his representative to DPC.
But nevertheless, he is still a better choice.
The tunnel vision of DPC, as from India's perspective, seems to be a backhand reinforcement of 'Strategic Depth' vis-a-vis Afganistan and India. How Imran Khan fits into this galaxy is still not clear. It would be enlightening to get the take of Mr. Imran Khan and/or Mr. Qureshi of defending Pakistan through DPC.
very true & very well written They have made Pakistan A JOKE
I am no fan of DPC, but writer is required to put a reason to back his argument, which in this article, he has completely failed to do.
Whisky Tango Foxtrot moment. First article of the day from someone who has some credentials in the first place to write about situation in the country.
People like you said dont vote DFC minded people and also not vote to other people they are corrupt so you are compaining PTI.
Why dont you stand in election we will vote for you if you got guts.
Hahahahahaha... 'a Whiskey Tango Foxtrot moment...' what an elegant way of putting it.
On a more sombre note... The major bone of contention I have with all these religious parties is that they don't have any agenda accept to hate. How do you plan to develop the economy? How do you plan to tackle the deficit? How will you create jobs?
All they talk about is destroying America and Israel... what good will that do me? Everybody has one design or another against Pakistan - America, India, Israel, Afghanistan, Britain, Iran, Russia, Oman; who sees Balochistan as their property and even Ethiopia who remembers our support for Ireteria... Do we kill everyone? What a useless notion - 'Kill everyone who doesn't fit your ideological agenda.'
I would rather be robbed at the hands of the current corrupt political parties than to start a global blood bath.
@Usama: does defence of Pakistan mean murder of innocent civilians and soldiers and decimation of its minorities???
In the name of democratic freedom, activities of these kind of groups cannot be allowed in country. These groups raising internal and external security threats for country by making Pakistan vulnerable to foreign media propaganda. however i am not agree with last paragraph of article where Eijaz just skipped basic problem and that is division of "deep state" itself like our society on Afghan policy and war on terror.
Ghamidi? Seriously?
The DPC seem to know very well what they want to fight against NATO/US/India/ liberals/valentines/etc. Havent really heard much about what they want to do for pakistan. How about just making a para military group where they can just fight and leave the politics to people who like to think rationally
A good and timely Op Ed. You ask "So what does the DPC want? The ostensible reason for coming together is to defend Pakistan." Do these extreme rightwing groups believe that such huge nuclear armed Pakistani armed forces are not capable to defend Pakistan? Do the armed forces need the support of these rag tag lashakar? On the other hand the PCO SC judges put a ban on one organization but they go out in the streets and openly defy the court orders. Should PPP and PM change their names and then they would be free from the reach of SC?
loved the starting...lucky irani circus..hahaha...
Is this someone’s idea of signalling? If it is, he needs to get his head checked for serious dementia.
Could not agree more, Sir. The 'head' was ready for such examination when it conceived and created such organisations as 'Our Boys', SSP, JeM,LeT and sundry other such beauties. By now the 'Head' is convinced of its infallibility.
This is indeed a message to the rest of the world.
The DPC Jalsas seek to reinforce the message that 'implosion' with 'nuke tech transfer' is actually a possibility. The signals are from the 'Establishment' that is disappointed with the way their grand strategy via 'Memogate' has unraveled.
"Waging a private war against India", good try to protect your mentors whom you have nowadays writes for. Sir, tell me, how come five members of JUD been involved in Mumbai attacks without the consensus of their boss ???
Great article Ejaz. The think tanks who came up with DPC are apparently suffering from tunnel vision, and someone should tell them the light they see there is followed by a speeding train!
You stole my line Mr Ejaz Haider i have been calling them ( behind the scene Ali baba ) and the chalis 40 terrorists for the last 2 weeks
You seem to have a change of heart writing against ( you know who) after a gap of few years. Anyway it seems Defa has been created as a pressure group to keep PTI ( already propped up by you know who) in line with the policies chalked out and not to stray. Further similar to Mush time strategy these 40 will be given KP and Quetta on a platter in case PML N is able to checkmate PTI in Funjab
Great piece indeed, very well written and thought provoking. These morons are indeed out to destroy Pakistan and have a sinister agenda that is so visbile to any sane person.
I keep scratching my head here in South America to see the coverage that the media grants to these clowns each and every day.
God bless you for writing with such courage. Always a pleasure reading you.
The DPC exhibits "selective outrage" for any event: Exhibit (1) Nato kills 26 soldiers under murky circumstance some months back and DPC wants to go to war with AMERIKA! Exhibit (2) TTP "executes" some 15 FC soldiers (on video no less) then brags about it, and DPC is NOWHERE TO BE FOUND (HEARD)!!!
We really need a DPC to save us from this DPC.. :S
Take away their patronage and see how they fall apart like a deck of forty cards. it's in their interest to see rest of Pakistan running scared, it's good people like Ejaz are now challenging them. Good one Ejaz.
@sadhana: He is not the only sleeping giant that woke up...only because his neighbor is getting slaughtered. As long as the killing -- in the name of the religion of the pure -- was going on for 30 years in Afghanistan and India, they had nothing to say.
Ejaz makes some valid points about the circus that is Difa-e-Pakistan. But while the other key participants such as JI, JuD, ASWJ, JUI, AML, etc have been named and shamed here, why was the name of another key participant left out? Ejaz Chaudhary represented the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf at the DPC rally. It is disturbing that most media and analysts reports voluntarily left out this key fact in their reporting.
@Asam Baloch: Is there any other way to look at this ? I mean what else can you say about hate mongering, self confessed sectarian goons ???
a seriously alarming situation. all the fundamentalists and radicals united and using a democratic platform, all set to screw up a poor man's already miserable life in the name of religion, yet again. (and till the day we (the masses) remain illiterate, we're not getting out of this self-imposed war on terrorism). our religious and democratic forces are the real reason where pakistan stands today. God forbid the day these self-righteous mullahs come into power, the first thing they're gonna do is bomb india and then impose bans on hudood ordinance and freedom of speech/media, maybe jeans and ties too, lol. afghanistan 2.0 in the making.....
Well written Ejaz. Very good analysis. And another slap to the great minds in our establishment. Who does not seem to understand how much pakistan suffer due to these sick policies they have. I wonder when will they be accountable for there mistakes.
This needs to be translated in urdu and published in all major urdu news papers... It is quite scary to think that the people who have taken up the task to defend Pakistan are in fact in cahoots to destroy the country.
"they have killed and would kill without remorse and in the name of Islam"
They have been doing it since the 1980s, Mr Rip Van Winkle. Will it be another 30 years and a few more hundred thousands dead before you realise that they are supported by the establishment?
You write head checked? I suggest they need head cracked open to see what actually it is filled with? Bhoosa or TNT?
@Architect: He has exposed the DPC, which I think is a bigger service than the 'good' as u say
the 40 characters clearly shows the dpc is another idea of the "strategic depth" lot. the aabpara's stamp is there for everyone to see. jawans sacrificed are just that - sacrifices. and we continue to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds, only this time we are unable to deceive anybody. it is not the dpc but the creators of dpc who are the biggest threat the country needs to be defended against.
lol DPC has struck fear in the hearts of liberal fascists
Baseless.. waste of time... I would love to hear what good have u done for Pakistan so far??? If someone is doing something good one should at least appreciate it..
very good and brave article. thank you
One question. The thousands of supporters that gather are ideologically inclined with these people AND they are a part of the nation. If they can gather a crowd of about 60-70 thousand then it must translate to quite a large (in millions) support base for them in the society. And we cannot just put these millions in prisons or kill them. Right wing people are a part of the society whether we like it or not (probably in majority).. Keeping that in mind how do we go about keeping a functional society, ensuring law and order, peace and international relationships? Simply put, ENOUGH WITH MULLA BASHING.. WHERE IS THE SOLUTION?
These circuses with very similar casts have been making rounds since before the creation of Pakistan. These politico-religious organisations rear their heads before elections and would fragment into various violent off-shoots later on when they are shunned by the masses, only to come together again under different names come the next elections ... this too shall pass, I hope.
Nonsense. I dont understand this Hysteria against DPC. I may not agree with their views but I will defend their right to hold peaceful political rallies. Better they are brought into the mainstream. Much crazier people show up in US Republican primaries. How about the entire BJP coalition should listen to their propaganda, will make DPC people look like oversized teddy bears. Or would you rather they start running Jehadi camps under the aupacies of Napakfauj???
How about write an article about how the army has been LIEING about NATO supplies closure for two months.LOL Ridiculous
Like our polarized society, is it possible that there are two aspects to our establishment as well? How can it be that our brave army jawans are dying in the hands of these extremist, and yet tell tale signs say that establishment supports this DPC as well. Are they playing both side again ? Classic Pakistani Conundrum ….
Its good that Mr Ejaz clearly stated that the goal of UN declared terrorist organization Jamat-Ul-Dawa and Mr Ejaz Haider is the same .. That is to defend Pakistan from India and USA. The rest is just semantics.
Ejaz is bit cautious alluding to the forces behind DPC simply because he has been assured by some of our PAK army officers that Army is truly against extremism.Ejaz,in my view, fails to understand that our Army has now come up with two new extremist group like good extremist and bad extremist.Moulana Samiul Haq,Hafiz Saeed and like these are still considered good by our establishment. This drama also will end when establishment would get what it wants.
Excellent article Ejaz. This lot has to be consistently and belligerently exposed. The common mistake of liberalism is its passive and excessive tolerance of the forces of intolerance and extremism.
SPOT ON!!!
Well you tried well to abuse the DPC cause but the fact is these rightist always defend Pakistan and stood strong. Also they have better solution for the country than your weird thoughts! They do have the masses majority but these are not the secular masses.
The main message is for the United States. These rallies are purported to convey the depth of popular anger on Pakistani streets against the US. By claiming cognisance of this public opinion, Pakistani Army can drive a harder bargain while striking any deal with the US. In comparison to these venom-spewing jehadis, Pakistan Army ought to look reasonable and moderate to the decision-makers in Washington.
Very good sir, nice article, DCP have no support in masses
very good Ejaz. Defend Pakistan against DPC!! Indeed.
Comparing the DPC to the Lucky Irani Circus was a nice touch and your so right that this is a mega whisky, tango, foxtrot moment and should be seriously recognised as such.
Every pronouncement by DPC leaders in their jalsas is an overt act of rebellion and treason. Interior Minister says that it is not in his powers to control these people. Where are the famous Suo Motto lords? Busy in hair-splitting over abstract legal problems. They would deny explict article 248 immunity, but would happily grant permission to malik ishaq to grace DPC shows.
"Whisky Tango Foxtrot moment for the entire nation" ....lol.......good one!
Loved the "Alibaba" reference.
but you failed to answer the basic question, who would save Pakistan from this DPC? beside media holds some responsibility in this whole DPC tamasha as you guys are giving these losers undue coverage.
