KARACHI: The ensuing crisis of regularising 7,200 contract teachers came to a climactic end when a signed notification, regularising 5,700, was issued from the office of the Governor Sindh on Tuesday evening, Express News reported.

Earlier in the evening police had fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesting teachers at the Karachi Press Club and stop them from marching towards the Chief Minister house. The teachers had retaliated by hurling stones at the police.

The cases of remaining 1,500 teachers would be scrutinised, with a decision being announced in the coming days.

Approximately 7,200 teachers were recruited for three years on contract that expired on Tuesday.

A bill was submitted to the Sindh Assembly by the education department for the teachers’ regularisation but the session was prorogued for an indefinite period last week.
