Prof. Timothy O’Dempsy, Director of Studies for Humanitarian Assistance Programmes at LSTM, will be the guest speaker of the seminar. The theme of the seminar is “Role of Academia and Media in Human Disaster Management”.
Prof. Arif Rashid Khawaja, UHS Director Centre of Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT), who is the chief organiser of the seminar, said that the whole idea was to bring together policy makers, system providers, media and aid agencies to a platform and discuss the need for having an academic link to the management of human disasters.
“We believe there is a need to build capacity of individuals and organisations who are involved in managing disasters,” he said adding that a recommendation would be made in the seminar for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
On the occasion, a formal agreement of cooperation would be signed between UHS and LSTM to devise joint strategies for promoting awareness, providing cheap and affordable preventive solutions and encouraging indigenous research on tropical diseases such as tuberculosis, typhoid, hepatitis, dengue, malaria and other vector-borne diseases.
The seminar will be attended by the representatives of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA), Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Global Change Impact Studies Centre, Islamabad, and Punjab Emergency Services (Rescue 1122). A number of NGOs and representatives of print and electronic media will also participate.
The speakers of the seminar include Dr Barry Munslow from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Deputy Chairman ERRA Lt Gen Sardar Mahmood Ali, Chairman NDMA Dr Zafar Iqbal Qadir, Director General Punjab Emergency Services Dr Rizwan Naseer, and others.
