Beyond the symptoms: Take depression seriously, say experts

If symptoms persist for two consecutive weeks they should be addressed.

KARACHI:
Too much or too little sleep, unexplained fatigue, a lack of interest in everyday things, a sense of guilt, anxiety, poor concentration and suicidal thoughts are some of the important symptoms of depression, said psychiatrists. If symptoms persist for two consecutive weeks they should be addressed. Prof. Amin Gadit, a senior psychiatrist based in Canada, said that doctors should not ignore the medical side-effects of depression. Dr Naureen emphasised this fact and said that depression puts people at a higher risk of developing coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, migraines, and multiple sclerosis. She pointed out that these conditions were overlooked by almost one-third of the people who suffer from depression.
