Democracies are noisy and reflect power tussles but national unity is only through democracy, the PM says.

LAHORE: Amid a three-way tussle among his government, the judiciary and the military establishment, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has reiterated that compliance with the constitution is the only way forward.

Addressing participants at training courses at the National Management College in Lahore, Gilani said that if the constitution is upheld, the country will develop and prosper and institutions become stronger.

The prime minister, who earlier told the National Assembly that he did not need a vote of confidence as he was the people’s representative, said that the people of Pakistan had learnt a lesson from history that democracy may not be easy but it is the only viable option. “Democracies are noisy, reflect power tussles and highlight internal conflicts. But it is only through democracy that we can work together to forge national unity,” the PM said.

He said that his government had revived the 1973 Constitution as it envisages a federal republic within the principles of democracy, freedom, equality, tolerance and social justice. “The fundamental spirit of the constitution is that all national policies have to be people-centric, not elite-centric.”

The prime minister said that his government had focused on strengthening the federal-provincial equation, thereby enhancing national integration. “There is still a long way to go but we have set the right direction. The 18th amendment indicates the strategic direction being followed by our democratic government to achieve the national objectives enshrined in the constitution.”
