For a number of years now, the admissions process at Karachi University (KU) has been tweaked to adjust to the demands of the student wings of political parties which operate on campus. This year too, was no different .
As the admissions committee officially concluded the process for its 5,000 seats for 2012, the vice chancellor, Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, yet again, formed a four-member commission to address the ‘complaints and grievances’ of students from political parties that pressure the university into admitting their members.
Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi was put in charge of the commission and the director of admissions, Dr Khalid Iraqi, the dean of management sciences, Dr Abuzar Wajidi, and the student adviser, Dr Ansar Rizvi, were to assist her.
The commission was formed on January 4 and the admissions process officially concluded the next day. But the commission continues to receive lists of students that parties want to be admitted. By January 7, the list had the names of around 390 students.
A senior university official told The Express Tribune that when KU refused to entertain the political admissions this year, student members of four political parties, the Imamia Students Organisation, Peoples Students Federation, Punjabi Students Association and All Gilgit Baltistan Students Organisation met the adviser, the two pro-vice chancellors and the vice chancellor to press them to comply with their demands. However, the student wings of the two major political parties at the university, the All Pakistan Muttahida Students Organisation of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, and the Islami Jamiat-e-Tulaba (IJT) of the Jamaat-e-Islami, distanced themselves from the practice this year. This fact was confirmed by another official in the university administration, who also refused to be identified.
Political admissions are a menace. Faculty are often threatened if they choose to stand their ground. But this year they are especially frightened and do not want to attract attention because of the murder of the student adviser of Sindh University, Dr Bashir Chanur. The professor was on his way back home when two armed motorcyclists shot him.
“Even the academia of Sindh University know that party members were behind the murder of Prof. Chanur, over an admissions dispute,” said an official. “As an administrative officer, I want to cooperate with the media but I have a family and personal life too. I fear my own security as well as for my family.”
He said that the admissions process itself provides ample time and opportunity to students to submit their concerns via claim forms, after the initial merit list is released.
The admissions director, Dr Iraqi, said that the whole process had become a way for people to mint money. “When I became the director this year, I announced that there would be no admissions off the merit list and I kept my word,” he said. “But since now a commission has been set up for a review, I am ready to entertain all genuine complaints, provided that they are submitted in writing.”
For his part Wajidi said that the committee had already reviewed genuine complaints. Around 31,000 students applied to KU this year. But only a handful submitted claim forms as compared to the past two years, said Dr Wajidi, which means that there were fewer mistakes in the admissions process.
The commission will meet again today to go over the suggestions and grievances of the admissions committee and the parties.

Ali Tanoli, whatever you said is clearly a show of hatred for MQM - You will never appreciate what MQM did for Karach it literally changed the city but setting up of an University is beyond MQM's reach as it then comes to the responsibility of Govt
@Salman orangi wala, Salman sahab i am born in karachi and have karachi Domicile which was a demand of MQM in 1980 for any one living in karachi and my parents came to karachi in 1954 sir what i said 1954 and since then we have three generations born and living in the city we are up country Muhajir like indians immigrated muhajirs are in karachi and we have same rights like any sindhi person living in sindh what i said was KU is one govt university in the city of 18 millions is not it shame for us why dont we make more campuses in all over the city why we have to travel milles to reach there and get killed in the time of fasad.
SALAM...
how about taking that admission procedure to a computerized system like CAP .No involvement of pol paties as well as teachers..I MYSELF AM AN PROUD SUPPORTER OF IJT AND IJT did'nt help me at all in 2005...that's why done engineering from private university..So not saying that they are all PAK and SAAF but we should close all the CHOOR DARWAZE wherever they are..
@ Ali Tanoli
Why should MQM erect campuses for students coming from upcountry ? Why do they have to come to Karachi ? Why their MNAs didnot do so in their hometowns .?
However, the student wings of the two major political parties at the university, the All Pakistan Muttahida Students Organisation of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, and the Islami Jamiat-e-Tulaba (IJT) of the Jamaat-e-Islami, distanced themselves from the practice this year. JOKE OF THE YEAR!!
Wajdi himself always gets kickbacks by admitting 30 students per department each year for all courses. He's been doing that since he became the dean and even before. Check the corruption cases charged against him at the HEC. He's famous for his line "the door is dooring, the fan is fanning, everything has a function".
shame for karachi city why dont last 29 years of MQM rule did not bother to make another campus in the city karachi south and west has lot non Urdu speaking peoples lives and for them there are no college and university shame on shame on pakistan
I have never encouraged my children to take admission in University of Karachi for one simple reason that political and religious-cum-political activities takes place in KU.
Numbers of students have been killed during the clashes between different political and religions groups but no authority is in a position to stop these activities.
Parents send their children to Karachi University for studies and not to take part in political activities or become victims of any political or religious group.
The valued readers of Express Tribune columns should just think and imagine that what would be the sentiments of those parents when they receive the dead bodies of their children due to no fault of their children.
In my personal opinion, all sort of political and religious-cum-political activities should be banned not only from University of Karachi and other Universities in the country but also from all government run colleges in Pakistan.
If the students want to have some extra curricular activities what they can do at the most is to make welfare society to help the intelligent and poor children who cannot afford books, uniforms etc.
How about making more universities in Karachi - There are 5758 universities across United States of America while in whole of Muslim Ummah we have not ore than 500 Universities. So as far as Pakistan especially Karachi is concerned they should Establish more Universities and also increase their budget.
Another issue is student spending in Karachi that comes to something over than Rs. 9,000 per student, while in Peshawar and Lahore they are spending around Rs. 19,000 / student???
Isn't this simple injustice???
I would like to appreciate the efforts of author on such wonderful article, further more here i would like to add this is not enough though if they do not get admission they come university on regular basis to create panic in University area. Student wings should be ban in universities of Pakistan and student councils should come forward to help students.
That is exactly why there was a ban on political activities in varsities which was uplifted during this tenure. The ban should be reinforced and all must study like real students. We cannot take Pakistan forward by killing our teachers and minting money.
Admissions on merit only - These guys recruit their own and remain strong with unqualified lower intelligence higher negative enthusiasm loyalists. This is what SC should be looking at, really! Allow for the well deserved hard working progressive population into the uni.
SC gains respect out of this, at the least!
Education thrives with dictators around. Universities are just tool for political parties
Any admissions should be on merit only.
This happens when political parties are allowed in Academic Institutions.........at least we should up-holding the decision of Army dictator.....not to allow any political parties in Academic institutes.........
@saif siddiqui:
But they have fewer universities there. So most students come to the major cities.
Will the so-called DEMOCRATIC political parties condemn this?
This is very shameful for the students as well for the country at large as political parties are demanding for sets.
Thats why our education system sucks
Inept and spineless VC. Thats the bottomline of this issue. The way ISO have the backing of many faculty politicos too. Like Karachi city, Karachi University has become fair game for all the politicians.
Just reading the name of KU brings back wonderful memories.......
VC of NED is very good administrator while VC of KU is poor administrator and political appointment too.
the gilgit baltistan organisation of a much smaller province(population wise) has more students than the punjab federation?
Being a shia myself, it is a matter of great embarassment and shame for me that Imamia students organization's name appear on this list. You are the followers of "gateway to the city of knowledge" (Hadith-e-rasool (SA) "ana madinat-ul-ilm wa Ali-un (AS) bab-o-ha"). If others are doing it, it does not legitimize your action. Please withdraw your list and clearly announce it that you are not a part of this wrongdoing. Merit and only merit should be the consideration.
So sad. If we could just do one thing in this country to solve most of its problems, that would be complete de-weaponization.
- Appreciated!
Thats the major difference between NED and KU.
