A team of 30 volunteers in Australia agreed to wear a pair of denims five days a week for three months without going anywhere near a washing machine.
And when the well-worn garments were put to the smell test, researchers came up with a sweet-smelling discovery -- the jeans didn't actually smell that bad, Daily Mail reports.
Melbourne University student Tullia Jack, who devised the experiment for her Masters thesis, concluded: "You really don't need to wash clothes as often as you think. Stains come and go, they just wear off."
Jack acknowledged that some of the garments did show evidence of spills, from motor oil to tuna, but did not smell "socially challenging".
The jeans were donated by a local label and the volunteers - equally split between men and women - ranged in age from 18 to 56. They were regularly interviewed during the three-month test.
Jack also discovered that men appeared more conscious of their own odour and went to extra lengths to make sure undergarments were clean - which perhaps explains why their jeans were no more pungent than female volunteers.
And while many longed to throw their jeans in the wash at some point, by the end of the experiment half were content to continue wearing their garments without a visit to the launderette, the Mail reported Tuesday quoting the Australian website news.com.au.

I conducted an experience earlier this month. I toured in Rajsthan and wore the same pair of Jeans for 8 days without wash or ironing or keeping it in fridge or any other special process. I could have completed my trip (11 days) in the same pair.
Courtney, I don't hate you. I actually kind of feel bad for you. Why would you want someone to hate you?
i just toss my underwear on my cat and if she runs away screaming, I wash it, else rest of the year I continue wearing it.
same case with my jeans ;)
I wash mine about once every two years or so. been doing that for years, no one evr complained.
oops. iphone typo. this thread is awesome. and clearly "Jeans" hates me, so my work here is done!
What about shalwars?
@Ali
Conclusive proof that your a bachelor - can't imagine any wife letting someone put dirty clothes in her fridge. Also not sure that anything short of freezing would have much of an impact on the things that would make clothes stink.
They should do this experiment in lahore during summer time and have them go to work in an un air conditioned bus/car.....
If only I could say the same of the clothes that the fifty or so people who ride with me to university every day.
I think this is pretty silly, but I have to agree that you don't need to wash your jeans after every single wear. It does depend on what you wore them for as well. If you spent the day cleaning out the garage and spring cleaning, give them a wash....if you ran to the mall or your sons basketball game then wear them again.
Wow. Jeans sure did have an impassioned opinion, but clearly doesn't own a dictionary. Learn to spell so we can take you seriously. Also, my laundry doesn't take 30 mintutes. I wish it did! Also jeams are made to stand up to long wear. That's why they were invented: for outdoor work!
Wow Usman!
DISGUSTING! Usman, why don't you just get off your butt and wash your jeans!!!! A half of a year without washing jeans is just NASTY. This article is rediculous. Hygiene isn't all about things smelling bad. Who cares if your jeans smell fine when they are infested with bugs, disease, mudd, germs, rotten food, bodily fluids and what not! I mean, you're carrying around 6 months worth of peoples germs. What is the big deal about just washing your clothes! It takes 30 minutes to wash your laundry. Get off your butt, and have some respect for the people around you who do not appreciate your filth!!
Ask me! I have been wearing the same pair for more than half a year. It only feels a little sticky when you touch it but otherwise its fine. Smells alright too.
It's not about the SMELL, as much as its about the FEEL. I hate when I take long, hot shower and have to wear well-worn jeans. It tickles.
or if it smells bad, you may just place it in the refrigerator for a day and it wont stink anymore. waterless cleanliness :)
i knew this for last 24 years.
