Imports in telecom sector up by 44%

The Federal Board of Statistics data reveals import expenses grew to Rs15.9 billion compared to last year.

Import expenses of the telecommunication sector went up by 44% during July-October of the current financial year owing to the import of apparatus, equipment and accessories to cater to the expansion of networks and infrastructure advancement.

Data released by the The Federal Board of Statistics (FBS) revealed that import expenses grew to Rs15.9 billion compared to the corresponding duration of the previous year.

According to analysts, the volume of imports swelled due to the fact that many companies were looking to expand in the untapped sector of the market.

The demand in the broadband sector is on the rise, which surges import in huge volumes by Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and particularly the WiMAX sector because of the use of Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), dongle or USB devices.

The analysts also noted that the cost of equipment is on a constant rise because the value of the rupee had dropped by three per cent against the dollar since the start of the fiscal year.

However, the pace of the importing telecom goods is slow, majorly because a majority of telecom operators have coverage in almost all areas across the country.

According to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), due to the rapid growth of the telecom sector, telecom facilities were available to as much as 95% of the country’s population.

Telecom operators import equipment for advancing and repair of their infrastructure.
