Judiciary must adapt to the changing needs of the people: LHC CJ
LHC CJ was addressing a reception ceremony arranged by Punjab bar council (PBC) at its complex on Saturday. Justice Farrukh Irfan Khan, Justice Aijaz-ul-Ahsan and Justice Manzoor Malik were also in attendance.
The chief justice said that people did not want a judiciary which remained too busy to seek time for meetings with executives of the government. Times had changed, the CJ said, and now judiciary had to prepare a system which took into account needs of the people.
He invited Punjab’s legal fraternity to step forward and help him eradicate problems plaguing courts at the district and High Court level. “I cannot resolve all problems alone but with your help I can,” Justice Azmat said indicating towards the lawyers.
“We have to determine a long term policy to resolve the troubles of litigants. We should not work to dispose of cases but decide cases only on merit,” he said.
Office bearers from different district bars association including Lahore Bar Association (LBA), Punjab Bar Council, and Pakistan Bar Council attended the ceremony and voiced their grievances and problems to the CJ.
Earlier, addressing the ceremony, LBA President Shahzad Hassan Sheikh urged that capable and noble senior lawyers should be elevated as judges. He said that if senior lawyers were overlooked for the positions, lawyers would react accordingly. He also criticised judicial policy saying justice should be meted out on merit not according to any policy.
He asked the chief justice to issue strict orders to stop the appointment of lower cadre employees of the courts for recording of evidences in the cases.
