Drastic Fall: Less animals slaughtered this year

Estimated decline was 50% for sheep and goat skins while it was 10% to 15% for cow hides.

KARACHI:
According to the chairman of Pakistan Tanners Association, SM Naseem, this year the number of sacrificial animals slaughtered ‘decreased drastically’ as compared to previous year because of high prices. The estimated decline was 50% for sheep and goat skins while it was 10% to 15% for cow hides. He said that this year only about 5.5 million animals were sacrificed in comparison to last year’s seven million. This will have a negative impact on the leather industry and the foreign exchange received, he said. Naseem urged the government to impose a complete ban on the export of animals.
