G-B celebrates 64th independence day

GILGIT:

Gilgit-Baltistan celebrated its 64th independence day on Tuesday with rich tributes to those who laid down their lives fighting against the Dogra rule.

“Our forefathers attained victory (independence) from then Dogra rule, we are proud Pakistanis today,” said G-B Governor Pir Karam Ali Shah. Shah Khan, one of the heroes of war of independence, was also present on the occasion.

Governor Shah said, “[After G-B Self Governance and Empowerment Ordinance 2009], it is our responsibility to make the new system successful; we will have to come together and overcome our mutual differences.”

Another function was held at Yadgar-e-Shuhada in Skardu to mark the day. Commissioner Baltistan Division and Deputy Inspector General of Police Mohammad Sharif placed flowers on the monument for those who died fighting for G-B’s independence. A police contingent presented the guard of honour on the occasion. A function was arranged by Bazm-e-Elm-o-Fun Skardu in Aiwan-e-Iqbal.

On August 14, 1947 the people of Gilgit rose against the Dogra and British regime. The armed movement continued almost for a year, culminating in the overthrowing of the Dogra rule on November 1, 1948. The region joined Pakistan unconditionally.
