Punjab Assembly passes pro-media resolution

The Punjab Assembly on Tuesday passed a pro-media resolution while the anti-media resolution has been challenged in LHC.

The Punjab Assembly on Tuesday passed a pro-media resolution following protests by journalists.

Sources also revealed that a meeting of provincial assembly members took place in the premises of the Assembly House. The draft of the resolution was prepared by the PML-N, tabled by Provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah. Members of the PPP had some reservations regarding the draft, but members of the PML-N managed to resolve their reservations.

Anti-media resolution challenged

A petition was filed in the LHC stated that the anti-media resolution was unconstitutional. The petition stated that the resolution was in conflict of article 19 and 25 of the constitution:


19. Freedom of speech, etc.

Every citizen shall have the right to freedom of speech and expression, and there shall be freedom of the press, subject to any reasonable restrictions imposed by law in the interest of the glory of Islam or the integrity, security or defence of Pakistan or any part thereof, friendly relations with foreign States, public order, decency or morality, or in relation to contempt of court,[15][commission of] or incitement to an offence.

25. Equality of citizens.

(1) All citizens are equal before law and are entitled to equal protection of law.

(2) There shall be no discrimination on the basis of sex alone.

(3) Nothing in this Article shall prevent the State from making any special provision for the protection of women and children.

Earlier, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said that the PML-N would pass a unanimous resolution in the Punjab Assembly in favour of the media. Addressing media in Lahore, Sanaullah said that the PML-N recognizes that the media has made many sacrifices for the revival of democracy in the country. He said that his party will attempt to resolve the ongoing dispute over the anti-media resolution passed in the provincial assembly. To further this end, he said the PML-N will enter into dialogue with the journalists.
