Ali, Nazeer become Pakistan’s fastest

Liaquat Ali and Nadia Nazeer emerged as Pakistan’s fastest man and woman at the 42nd National Athletics Championship.

Army’s Liaquat Ali and Wapda’s Nadia Nazeer emerged as Pakistan’s fastest man and woman on the final day of the 42nd National Athletics Championship held in Islamabad.

Ali won the 100-metre race in 10.48 seconds, beating teammate Mohammad Imran (10.69) and Higher Education Commission’s (HEC) Ali Raza Toor (10.90) for second and third place.

“This race is a boost of confidence for me,” Ali told The Express Tribune. “It’s an effort towards my aim. With this win I promise that I will win a medal in the 2010 Asian Games as well.”

Ali also won two other gold medals in the men’s 200 metres and 4x400 relay event.

In women’s 100-metre sprint, Nazeer crossed the finish line in 12.30 seconds as teammate Sumaira Tayyaba finished second in 12.95 seconds and HEC’s Madiha Latif third with 13.16 seconds.


The 4x400 women’s relay ended in bad taste as Pakistan Steel team which has South Asia’s fastest woman Naseem Hameed in it, got disqualified in the end as one of the four participants of the team changed her allotted track during the race.

As a result, Wapda won the gold medal in the event and Pakistan Steel had to lose its second position to HEC women athletes.

In other disciplines, men’s marathon was won by Army?s Mohammad Aslam in two hours, 20 minutes and 42 seconds while Railway’s Abida Changez bagged gold medal in the discus throw event, covering 36.45 metres.

In overall team performances Pakistan Army dominated the field in the men’s events with 16 gold medals as Wapda finished second with four gold medals and Pakistan Air Force bagged one gold medal.

Wapda led the women’s events with 18 gold medals, beating Pakistan Steel that won one gold medal and HEC that only grabbed one silver medal.
