Taylor Swift’s cancelled Vienna concerts in August 2024 are set to become the subject of a documentary exploring the thwarted terrorist plot that led to the shows being called off.

The project, provisionally titled Taylor Swift Wien, will examine the events surrounding the planned attack and the response of fans after the three performances on August 8, 9 and 10 were cancelled. According to Variety, Andreas Pichler and Veronika Kaserer are co-directing the documentary, which is being produced by Germany’s Beetz Brothers and Austria’s Markand Media.

The film will explore three connected stories, including the security operation that prevented the suspected attack, the experiences of Swift’s supporters in Vienna and the radicalisation of the main suspect.

Its synopsis contrasts the supportive Swiftie community with online environments associated with toxic masculinity and extremist radicalisation. The production will also follow three female fans who responded to the cancellations by organising psychological support for fellow concertgoers and engaging with Austrian authorities.

The planned attack involved two male teenagers who allegedly intended to use explosives and other weapons against concert attendees. More than 200,000 fans had been expected to travel to Vienna for the performances.

The documentary will also examine the role of intelligence agencies in preventing the attack, with producer Georg Tschurtschenthaler describing the security operation as one of its central storylines.

Swift addressed the cancellations in an Instagram statement on August 21, 2024, describing the situation as devastating. She expressed gratitude to authorities, saying she was thankful that fans were mourning cancelled concerts rather than lost lives.

The documentary is expected to premiere on German broadcaster ZDF in October 2027, followed by an international release. Swift’s management has reportedly been informed about the project, although the production details and distribution arrangements remain subject to further announcements.
