Sophia Bush breaks silence on Chad Michael Murray marriage in new memoir

Sophia Bush revisits her brief marriage to Chad Michael Murray in her memoir, sharing lessons from their 2005 split

Actress Sophia Bush has opened up about her brief marriage to One Tree Hill co-star Chad Michael Murray in her new memoir, And I Will Tell You Mine, revisiting a relationship she says she rarely discusses.

In an interview with PEOPLE published on October 27, Bush, 44, reflected on her relationship with Murray, 45, which began in 2003 while they were filming the teen drama in Wilmington, North Carolina.

According to her memoir, Bush initially connected with Murray through conversations about his childhood and personal struggles. However, she later described experiencing insecurity, possessiveness and controlling behaviour during their relationship. She also recounted confronting rumours of infidelity, which Murray denied at the time.

Bush wrote that doubts arose before their wedding in April 2005, including allegations of cheating. The couple separated in September that year and finalised their divorce in December 2006.

The actress told PEOPLE that discussing the relationship was difficult, describing it as an experience from her college years that she would rather leave in the past. She also reflected on how the relationship affected her ability to trust her instincts and recognise patterns in her personal life.

Despite their separation, Bush and Murray continued working together on One Tree Hill, including filming romantic scenes. Bush said she remained committed to her professional responsibilities despite the personal circumstances.

Murray has not publicly responded to the allegations detailed in Bush's memoir. PEOPLE reported that it had reached out to him for comment. In a previous interview with E! News, Murray addressed past allegations involving his relationship with Bush, saying he preferred not to revisit the subject.

Both actors have since moved on with their lives. Murray married actress Sarah Roemer, and they have three children. Bush married former soccer player Ashlyn Harris in 2025, after previously being married to Grant Hughes.

Through her memoir, Bush said she hopes sharing personal experiences will help readers better understand their own lives and relationships.
