Disney reportedly in talks with Bungie and DICE for new Star Wars: Battlefront game
Disney is reportedly in talks with DICE and Bungie about developing a new Star Wars: Battlefront game, potentially paving the way for a third instalment in the modern series.
Gaming insider Jeff Grubb shared the information in a recent Giant Bomb YouTube video, reporting that both studios have shown interest in working on the project. However, the game has not entered development, and no developer has been confirmed.
DICE developed the two games in the rebooted Battlefront series, released in 2015 and 2017. Although the studio subsequently moved on to other projects, it could return to the franchise nearly a decade after the release of Star Wars: Battlefront 2.
Disney and Lucasfilm have reportedly been searching for a development partner for some time, with few studios willing to take on the project.
According to Grubb, DICE appears to have the first opportunity to accept the work, with Bungie potentially stepping in if the EA-owned studio declines.
Bungie is known for developing science-fiction shooters, including Halo and Destiny. The studio has also worked on Marathon, an extraction shooter that has struggled commercially. Bungie has faced internal challenges in recent years, including staff layoffs and complaints about toxicity within its leadership.
Despite its recent difficulties, Bungie's experience with first-person shooters could make it a potential candidate for the franchise. However, its established approach to weapons and combat would need to accommodate the Star Wars setting.
A third modern Battlefront game has remained elusive since the release of Battlefront 2. An earlier project intended to continue the original series was cancelled, while DICE eventually moved on from the franchise.
With discussions reportedly ongoing, a new Battlefront game remains a possibility rather than a confirmed project. If development moves forward, the next instalment could still be several years away.
