Nathan Fielder’s documentary about convicted Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes has received a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its US theatrical release on October 16.
Titled You Can See Everything, the film is directed by Fielder and Lance Oppenheim and follows Holmes in the years before she began serving her 11-year prison sentence.
According to reports, the filmmakers spent three years filming in secret, including gaining access to Holmes’s home shortly before she was sent to prison.
The documentary has also received a score of 97 on Metacritic, which labels the reviews “universal acclaim”.
Several critics have praised the film’s approach to Holmes and the Theranos scandal. The Daily Beast described it as “Not just the film of the year – it’s a documentary that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the form’s all-time greats”.
The Guardian called it a “modern masterpiece of deceit”, adding that the film was “somehow, more shocking, twistier, thornier and revealing than billed – a stupefying and glorious destabilising hall of psychological mirrors”.
However, some reviews have highlighted the documentary’s unconventional style. Variety described it as “a one-of-a-kind reality-TV-as-hangout-movie psychodrama circus”, while Screen Daily praised its examination of how people involved in the story shape their versions of events.
Holmes, 42, was convicted of fraud in 2022 after Theranos claimed its technology could diagnose a range of medical conditions using only a few drops of blood.
The company’s technology was found not to work as claimed, and Holmes was sentenced to 11 years in prison. She began serving her sentence at a Texas facility in May 2023.
A trailer released in September showed Holmes telling Fielder, “I don’t have anything to deceive you on. Of course I’m not deceiving you. I’m engaging with you as a human being. Why would I deceive you? There’s no reason for me to do that.”
You Can See Everything premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in September and is scheduled to arrive in UK cinemas on November 20.
