The live-action television adaptation of Dungeon Crawler Carl is expected to begin filming in 2027, with further details about the project set to be announced in the coming weeks.

Author Matt Dinniman and executives from Universal Television shared the production update during a New York Comic Con panel on Saturday.

Kelsey Balance, Universal Global Television’s head of scripted series, said the team was developing scripts and preparing key production departments.

“We are starting to see drafts and outlines, and we’ve gotten the whole series pitch, which is really exciting, but it’s continued to evolve,” Balance said.

She added that the production team was hiring department heads and working to secure producers, production designers, directors and casting personnel. Balance said more announcements were expected “very soon, within the next few weeks”.

The adaptation is based on Dinniman’s bestselling LitRPG novel series and is being developed for Peacock through Universal Global Television.

Chris Yost and Eric Heisserer will lead the series, with executive producers including Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins and Rachel Hargreaves-Heald of Fuzzy Door. Dinniman is attached as co-executive producer.

The story follows Coast Guard veteran Carl after an alien invasion forces humanity’s survivors to compete in a dangerous intergalactic game show. Carl attempts to survive alongside Princess Donut, his ex-girlfriend’s talking cat, as they face monsters, aliens and other contestants.

Jeff Hays, who narrates the audiobooks, has already been announced as the voice of Princess Donut. However, Dinniman confirmed that Carl has not yet been cast.

“I want Carl to be played by someone who embodies the role and someone who can be both goofy and give off that really, really scary vibe,” the author said.
