James Van Der Beek remembered in emotional ‘Dawson’s Creek’ reunion at Heroes Gala
James Van Der Beek was remembered by his Dawson’s Creek family during an emotional reunion at the Barbara Berlanti Heroes Gala in Santa Monica on Saturday, October 3.
The event, held at Barker Hangar, saw series creator Kevin Williamson receive the Barbara Berlanti Hero Award. Joshua Jackson and Julie Plec presented the honour, recognising Williamson’s efforts to organise a Dawson’s Creek table read that raised support for Van Der Beek and his family.
Jackson became emotional while recalling the circumstances surrounding the benefit reading. He said Van Der Beek’s health deteriorated shortly before the event and praised Williamson for helping ensure the actor’s children could be surrounded by people celebrating their father.
Williamson also fought back tears as he reflected on his relationship with Van Der Beek, who played Dawson Leery in the series. He described the actor as the soul of the show and remembered watching him grow from a young performer into a husband, father and friend.
The writer also recalled their early working relationship, joking that Van Der Beek began his time on the series as a difficult young actor who regularly questioned scripts. Williamson said their exchanges became part of their relationship over the years.
Van Der Beek died in February at the age of 48 following his battle with colorectal cancer. His family announced his death after he had publicly discussed his diagnosis in 2024.
Mary-Margaret Humes, who played Dawson’s mother, also attended the reunion alongside Jackson. The gathering came several months after Van Der Beek’s death and renewed attention on the long-running bond between members of the cast and creative team.
The gala also honoured The Pitt actor Katherine LaNasa with the Inspirational Hero Award for her advocacy and resilience following her cancer diagnosis. Former NBA player Jason Collins was posthumously honoured with the Memorial Hero Award.
The Barbara Berlanti Heroes Gala raises money for F Cancer, supporting early detection, prevention and psychosocial initiatives.
