Tom Bateman opens up about Daisy Ridley’s link to 'The Love Hypothesis'

Tom Bateman’s wife Daisy Ridley has an unexpected connection to the fan-fiction origins of 'The Love Hypothesis'

Tom Bateman, who stars opposite Lili Reinhart in The Love Hypothesis, is married to actress Daisy Ridley, whom he met while working on the 2017 film Murder on the Orient Express.

Bateman, 37, and Ridley began dating after meeting on the film’s set. Although marriage rumours circulated in 2020, the couple confirmed their marriage in 2023.

Ridley rose to international fame as Rey in the Star Wars franchise. She has also appeared in films including Chaos Walking, The Marsh King’s Daughter and Young Woman and the Sea.

Ridley has an unexpected connection to The Love Hypothesis, as her Star Wars character, Rey, was part of the inspiration behind the novel’s fan-fiction origins. Author Ali Hazelwood’s book is widely associated with Reylo fan fiction, based on the pairing of Rey and Kylo Ren.

During an interview with Elle, Reinhart and Bateman addressed the connection and explained that Bateman and Ridley were not aware of the fan fiction before he was cast in the film.

“People genuinely think that Tom and Daisy knew about this,” Reinhart said, adding that she was certain they had not known about it.

Bateman recalled telling Ridley about the book after he was offered the role. According to the actor, Ridley had heard about a book inspired by the Star Wars characters but did not know about its connection to them.

Bateman plays Dr Adam Carlsen in The Love Hypothesis, while Reinhart portrays PhD candidate Olive Smith. The romantic comedy follows Olive as a fake relationship with Adam gradually becomes more complicated.

The cast also includes Rachel Marsh, Nicholas Duvernay, Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan.
