Robert Sean Leonard reveals why he left New York and returned to New Jersey to raise his three daughters

Dead Poets Society and House star Robert Sean Leonard has opened up about his decision to move his family back to his hometown in New Jersey to raise his three daughters.

Leonard, 57, returned to Ridgewood, New Jersey, after deciding that he did not want to raise his children in New York City. In an interview with PEOPLE published Tuesday, the actor explained that he wanted his daughters to experience the suburban childhood he remembered fondly.

“I knew I couldn’t do it in New York,” Leonard said, adding that his wife, Gabriella Salick, believed he needed the nostalgia of returning home.

Leonard left New Jersey at 16 to pursue a career in theatre in New York City. Despite building a successful acting career, he said he is happy to have returned to the community where he grew up.

The actor recalled taking part in activities at the same schools he once attended, including handing out pizza at his former grammar school and watching his daughter cheerlead on the high school field where he once spent time.

Leonard said he wanted his daughters to have more space and the opportunity to experience life in a suburban neighbourhood. “I need a screen door and to see kids running around in the backyard,” he said.

Leonard is best known for playing Dr James Wilson on House, appearing in the medical drama for eight seasons alongside Hugh Laurie. He also earned recognition for his role as Neil Perry in Dead Poets Society.

The actor has previously spoken about his preference for theatre and a quieter lifestyle, saying he enjoys reading, walking and cooking more than the demands of television production.
