Christian Bale has opened a new foster care facility in Palmdale, California, through his Together California organisation, with the project designed to help keep siblings together after entering the foster care system.

The 11,000-square-foot community officially opened on Friday and includes 12 furnished homes, as well as two studio apartments for young people transitioning out of foster care. The facility will provide programmes focused on stability, support and care for children and families.

“It’s our job to turn their heartbreak and their pain into love and hope and a sense of future,” Bale told ABC 7 while discussing the project.

The Dark Knight star became involved in the initiative after reflecting on the circumstances faced by children who enter foster care. Bale, who has two children with his wife Sibi Blazic, partnered with Together California Executive Director Tim McCormick in 2022 to develop the community.

The organisation said the facility aims to create a welcoming environment where families can remain together and children can find greater stability. Los Angeles has the highest population of children in foster care in the United States, with more than 30,000 children in the system, according to the report.

The project was funded through donations, with the Austrian American Council West helping raise nearly $9 million. Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger also played a role in bringing the development to completion.

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, organisers said residents are expected to begin moving into the foster care community next month.
