'Ransom Canyon' cancelled: Why did Netflix scrap the show after 2 seasons?

The series, based on Jodi Thomas’ novels, faced uncertainty after its first season delivered modest viewing figures

Netflix has cancelled Ransom Canyon after two seasons, ending the Texas romantic drama starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, according to Deadline.

The decision comes around six weeks after the second season was released on July 23.

The series, based on Jodi Thomas’ novels, had already faced uncertainty after its first season delivered respectable but modest viewing figures.

Season 2 returned with 8 episodes, compared with 10 in the first season, alongside changes to the supporting cast and a creative overhaul.

Deadline reported that the second season was better received internally, but its audience declined significantly.

The second season recorded 4.1 million views during its opening week, down 43% from the 7.2 million views recorded by Season 1 during its debut week in 2025.

Although Season 1 briefly returned to Netflix’s weekly Top 10, Season 2 remained there for only three weeks, compared with four weeks for the first season.

The cancellation leaves the story of childhood friends and star-crossed lovers Staten Kirkland and Quinn O’Grady with a relatively settled conclusion.

Unlike the first-season finale, the second season ended with the pair together rather than separated by a major cliffhanger.

The finale did leave potential storylines involving Ellie and Staten’s half-brother Levi, played by Steve Howey, which could have been explored in a third season.

April Blair served as showrunner, creator and executive producer, while Duhamel and Kelly were among the executive producers.
