Heated Rivalry musical parody recoups off-Broadway and extends run again

Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody has recouped its investment Off-Broadway and extended its New York run for a second time, marking another major milestone for the stage adaptation inspired by Rachel Reid’s bestselling hockey romance.

The parody musical, which opened Off-Broadway at The Culture Club in May, was initially scheduled for an eight-week engagement. Strong audience demand has since led to multiple extensions, with the production now scheduled to continue through November 1, 2026.

The show’s recoupment means the production has earned back the money invested in staging it, a notable achievement for a new Off-Broadway musical that was developed and brought to the stage in a relatively short period.

Written by Dylan MarcAurele, Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody turns the story of Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov into a deliberately over-the-top musical comedy. The characters were originally created by Reid for her Game Changers book series and became widely recognised through the television adaptation Heated Rivalry.

Jay Armstrong Johnson originally stars as Ilya Rozanov, while Jimin Moon originated the role of Shane Hollander. Moon later departed the production, with Aaron Alcaraz taking over the role before Troy Iwata joined the cast as Shane on August 30. Iwata, known for his work on The Daily Show as well as musical theatre productions, is currently performing opposite Johnson.

The musical takes its inspiration primarily from the television series while also poking fun at the intense fandom that has grown around Shane and Ilya’s secret relationship.

Its story follows the two professional hockey players as they navigate their attraction to each other while competing on rival teams. The production exaggerates the romance, sex and drama of their relationship for comic effect, while also incorporating jokes aimed at the audience and fandom surrounding the original story.

MarcAurele wrote the book, music and lyrics, with Alan Kliffer directing the production. The show grew rapidly from its early development, beginning with concert performances that sold out within hours before eventually becoming a fully staged Off-Broadway production.

The musical’s popularity has extended beyond New York. An Edinburgh Fringe production brought the parody to the UK earlier this year, while other productions have also been staged in Canada and the UK.

The Off-Broadway production has also attracted attention from people connected to the wider Heated Rivalry phenomenon. Troy Iwata’s casting comes as the television series continues to build anticipation for its second season, which is currently in production and is expected to premiere in 2027.

The timing has made the parody particularly relevant for fans waiting for the next chapter of Shane and Ilya’s story. While the television series is moving towards its second season, the stage production offers audiences a deliberately campier and more comedic way to revisit the romance.

The original cast recording of Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody is also scheduled for release on September 18, giving fans another way to experience MarcAurele’s score beyond the stage production.

With the production now recouped and its run extended through November 1, Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody has gone considerably further than its creators’ original eight-week plan.

What began as a fast-moving parody inspired by a hugely popular queer hockey romance has developed into a sustained Off-Broadway success, with the show's continued extensions reflecting the growing appetite for Heated Rivalry content while fans await Season 2 of the television series.
