The Witcher 1 remake put on hold amid Witcher 4 development

Development on The Witcher remake has been temporarily paused awaiting technology and assets from The Witcher 4

Development on the remake of the first The Witcher game has been temporarily paused as Fool’s Theory waits for The Witcher 4 to progress.

The remake was first announced in 2022 and is being developed by Fool’s Theory, but the studio is currently focused on other projects within the franchise.

Most of its team is working on The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past expansion, while a smaller group is supporting CD Projekt Red with The Witcher 4.

According to CD Projekt Red, the pause is linked to production dependencies between the two games rather than simply a lack of developers available to work on the remake.

“Fool’s Theory team is focused mainly on the development of Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, while a relatively small part of their team is supporting the development of The Witcher 4,” a CD Projekt Red representative told GameSpot.

“As we have previously announced, the development on The Witcher Remake has been temporarily integrated with The Witcher 4 due to production process dependencies.”

The remake is being built using technology and development foundations established for The Witcher 4.

CD Projekt Red said the team therefore needs assets, tools and production pipelines from the newer game before work on the remake can continue efficiently.

“As The Witcher Remake will be built on the foundation laid by The Witcher 4, we need to have the necessary assets, tools, and pipelines ready for efficient development,” the representative added.

Neither The Witcher remake nor The Witcher 4 currently has an official release date. CD Projekt Red is targeting 2028 for The Witcher 4, which will follow Ciri and take place mostly in Kovir and Lan Exeter.
