Ryan Reynolds says he’d ‘totally do a cameo’ in HBO’s 'Lanterns' 15 years after 'Green Lantern'

Ryan Reynolds has revealed that he would be open to making a cameo in HBO’s Lanterns, 15 years after starring as Hal Jordan in the much-maligned 2011 superhero film Green Lantern.

Reynolds, 49, shared his enthusiasm for a potential appearance while attending the New York City premiere of his upcoming film Mayday. Asked about the possibility of returning to the Green Lantern universe, the actor made his position clear.

“I would totally do a cameo in that. I love it,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds originally played Hal Jordan, the human pilot who becomes the Green Lantern of Sector 2814, in Green Lantern. The 2011 film was poorly received by critics and underperformed at the box office, ultimately becoming one of the more notorious entries in the superhero genre.

Despite the film's reputation, Reynolds said he took valuable lessons from the experience and does not view his involvement in Green Lantern entirely negatively. He credited the movie with helping launch the next phase of his career and pointed to another major personal connection: it was where he met his future wife, Blake Lively.

The actor has also spent years poking fun at the film, particularly after finding major success as Wade Wilson in the Deadpool franchise. His willingness to return to the property therefore comes as something of a surprise, particularly as a new Green Lantern story has now arrived on television.

HBO’s Lanterns stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, offering a new take on the iconic DC characters. The series follows the two Green Lanterns as they investigate a murder in Nebraska, eventually uncovering a larger mystery.

The new series has been positioned as a more grounded, detective-driven interpretation of the Green Lantern mythology, moving away from the approach taken by Reynolds’ 2011 film.

Reynolds’ potential cameo would also create an unusual connection between the two versions of the franchise. Chandler currently plays the older Hal Jordan in the new DC Universe, while Reynolds previously portrayed the character in the standalone 2011 film.

For now, there is no indication that Reynolds has been approached for an appearance in Lanterns. His comments simply make clear that, if the opportunity arises, he would be willing to return.

Fifteen years after Green Lantern, Reynolds appears to have made peace with the film and is now willing to revisit the character that once became one of the most frequently mocked chapters of his career.
