Ruby Rose has shared what she says are text messages from Hayden Panettiere in which the late actress described being deeply hurt by her mother, Lesley Vogel, shortly before Panettiere's death at 36.
Rose, 40, posted screenshots of the alleged messages on Threads on Wednesday as she defended Panettiere following comments made by Vogel about her daughter's death. The messages appear to show someone saved as "Hayden" in Rose's phone discussing her relationship with her mother and the emotional pain it had caused her.
In one of the messages, the person identified as Hayden wrote: "I was sobbing over her cruelty yesterday thinking, my god I'm 36 and she can still cause this kind of pain." The message continued: "I'm her only child left and this is how she wants to handle the situation?!"
Another exchange showed Rose and the person discussing their respective relationships with their mothers. Rose also said the pair had discussed the possibility of creating a podcast or an Anthony Bourdain-style show focused on personal issues and travelling to find solutions.
Entertainment Weekly has not independently verified that the person in the screenshots is Panettiere. The publication said it had contacted Rose's representatives for more information and reached out to Vogel for comment.
Rose's decision to share the alleged messages came after Vogel spoke publicly about her daughter's death in an interview with NBC News. Vogel criticised Panettiere's on-and-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson, who was with the actress when she died, saying that her family had been trying to distance Panettiere from him for years.
Vogel also said she believed Panettiere had gone down the "wrong path" and had "lost her way", comments that prompted criticism from Rose and other public figures.
Panettiere had previously spoken publicly about her complicated relationship with her mother. During a May appearance on Jay Shetty's On Purpose podcast, she said she ended her professional relationship with Vogel when she was 19 because she wanted her mother to simply be her mother.
Panettiere recalled telling her mother, "I don't want us to work together anymore. I just want you to be my mom." According to Panettiere, Vogel responded, "You owe me."
The actress also discussed her relationship with her mother in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, which was published earlier this year. Her struggles with addiction, mental health and difficult relationships became major parts of the book.
Rose's posts have added another layer to the public discussion surrounding Panettiere's final years, particularly as friends and former colleagues have continued to defend the actress and remember her following her death on August 16.
Panettiere's official cause and manner of death remain undetermined. The Greenville County Coroner's Office said an autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death, while additional testing, including toxicology, is still pending.
For now, the screenshots shared by Rose remain unverified, and the allegations about Panettiere's relationship with her mother should not be treated as established fact. The messages nevertheless provide another account of the personal difficulties Panettiere had previously discussed publicly, while the circumstances surrounding her death continue to be investigated.
