'Obsession' ending explained: What happens to Nikki and Bear?

Curry Barker's horror film Obsession ends with Bear's cursed wish finally being broken, but Nikki is left to deal with the devastating consequences of everything that happened while she was under its control.

The film follows Bear (Michael Johnston), who has feelings for his friend and co-worker Nikki (Inde Navarrette). After failing to confess his feelings, Bear uses a mysterious object called the One Wish Willow to wish that Nikki would love him more than anyone else in the world. His wish comes true, but Nikki's love quickly becomes an uncontrollable obsession.

As Nikki's behaviour becomes increasingly disturbing, Bear discovers that the woman in front of him is not entirely the Nikki he knows. Her real spirit has been trapped in a supernatural realm, while a version of Nikki created by the One Wish Willow has taken over her body.

The situation becomes increasingly violent. Nikki kills Sarah after discovering that Bear secretly met with her, and Bear eventually learns that there are only a few ways to break the curse: he must die, Nikki must die or someone else must use the One Wish Willow to reverse the original wish. Bear attempts to convince Ian to reverse it, but Ian instead uses the opportunity to make a wish for money.

When Nikki confronts Bear at home, Ian arrives and she shoots him. Realising that he has run out of options, Bear takes Nikki's gun and locks himself in the bathroom. He initially tries to kill himself with the gun but cannot go through with it. He instead swallows a lethal amount of oxycodone and then attempts to make himself vomit the pills back up.

While Bear is in the bathroom, Nikki discovers the One Wish Willow and makes her own wish. She wishes for Bear to love her as much as she loves him.

The second wish immediately changes Bear. When he comes out of the bathroom, he is suddenly just as intensely devoted to Nikki as she has been to him. The two passionately kiss, but Bear soon collapses and dies from the overdose. Nikki's wish has effectively transformed him, but it cannot save him from the drugs he has already taken.

Bear's death finally breaks the original wish. Nikki's real spirit returns to her body, freeing her from the supernatural version of herself that had been controlling her.

However, the ending is far from a happy one. Although Nikki is finally herself again, she remembers the horrifying events that happened while she was under Bear's wish, including the deaths of her friends. She is therefore left to live with the consequences of actions she did not consciously choose to commit.

The ending ultimately reinforces the film's central warning about interfering with another person's free will. Bear wanted Nikki to love him, but by forcing that love through the One Wish Willow, he effectively erased her ability to make that choice for herself. Nikki's freedom is eventually restored, but only after the wish has caused irreversible damage.
