Perez Hilton's mom filed for custody of his kids to 'protect' them after livestream

His mother through her attorney said that her main concern "is to protect the children and make sure they are safe"

Perez Hilton's mother, Teresita Lavandeira, filed for temporary custody of his three children following the blogger's disturbing livestream, with her lawyer saying the family's priority is to protect the children and help them recover from what happened.

Lavandeira filed the petition in a Miami family court on August 7, three days after Hilton, 48, was hospitalised following a TikTok livestream from his Miami home during which he appeared to self-harm.

In an exclusive statement to People on August 12, Florida attorney Natalie F Guerra-Valdes, who represents Lavandeira, said: "My main concern and objective, as well as the family's, is to protect the children and make sure they are safe."

"We want them to have some sense of normalcy as they begin their journey of healing after the tragic events that occurred last week," she added.

Hilton's children, Mario, 13, Mia, 11, and Mayte, 8, live with their grandmother in Miami, where the family recently moved to be closer to relatives. His family previously said the children, along with Hilton's sister and niece, were at the home shortly before the livestream began. When it became clear that Hilton was experiencing a severe mental health crisis and harming himself, they "immediately fled" the property.

Hilton was hospitalized after local authorities responded to reports of a suicide attempt. He was taken into care under Florida's Baker Act, which allows authorities to involuntarily hold someone who is considered a threat to themselves or others.

His family said on August 8 that Hilton had experienced "significant blood loss" and "additional injuries" during the incident and would require surgery. They described his condition at the time as "serious but stable" and said his treatment and recovery would be a long process.

Lavandeira's custody filing comes as Hilton remains in recovery, with his family focused on providing stability for his children following the traumatic incident. His representatives have not provided another update on his condition since August 5.

Hilton's TikTok account was also banned following the livestream, with a US spokesperson for the platform confirming the action to People.
