Naomi Osaka has revealed that she has a new boyfriend while competing during the North American hard-court swing, though the four-time Grand Slam champion has kept his identity private.

The Japanese tennis star disclosed the relationship during the Washington Open, where she reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual champion Alexandra Eala.

Speaking to Tennis Channel before her match against Eala, Osaka appeared uncertain about how to describe her new partner.

“I think, obviously, I don't know if I'm supposed to say partner or my boyfriend,” Osaka said. “I don't know, but his family's from here. He grew up here a little bit.”

When asked where in the DMV area he grew up, Osaka laughed before admitting she could not remember the exact location.

“Wait, I'm failing the test,” she said. “Wait. Okay, no, no. He told me multiple times.”

Osaka said her boyfriend's family is from the area, but did not confirm whether he grew up in Virginia, Maryland or the District of Columbia. She also did not reveal his name or provide further details about their relationship.

The revelation comes after Osaka's six-year relationship with rapper Cordae ended in 2025. The former couple welcomed their daughter, Shai, in 2023 and continue to co-parent.

Osaka has previously spoken about prioritising her daughter. “She makes sure she's the priority,” she told People in May.

The 28-year-old entered the Canadian Open as the No. 11 seed and advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating Canada's Leylah Fernandez in straight sets. She was scheduled to face world No. 2 Elena Rybakina for the first time.

“I mean, some hard hitting. She's an incredible player,” Osaka said of Rybakina. “She won the Australian Open this year. So, I'm just really excited to play her, because I have never played her. It's good to just get that information in.”
