Caitríona Balfe leads Alfonso Cuarón’s chilling new Apple TV thriller 'Ascension'

Apple TV orders Alfonso Cuarón’s horror thriller 'Ascension', starring Outlander star Caitríona Balfe as a filmmaker.

Apple TV has ordered Ascension, a horror thriller series from Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, with Outlander star Caitríona Balfe set to lead the cast.

The series has been in development for several years and was first reported in 2017, when Casey Affleck was originally attached to star. Ascension is inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days and follows a documentary filmmaker investigating a mysterious cult.

Balfe will play Rose, a recently divorced mother and determined documentary filmmaker known for uncovering the secrets of others while struggling with unresolved issues in her own life. Her latest project focuses on the Church of Ascension, a mysterious 20th-century cult. As Rose becomes increasingly drawn to its teachings, she discovers a more dangerous reality beneath the organisation.

Cuarón co-wrote the series with his brother Carlos Cuarón, Natalie Erika James and Christian White. James and White will serve as co-showrunners, while James is also set to direct the series. All four writers will executive produce, with Balfe also serving as an executive producer.

The series will be produced by Anonymous Content, with Apple Studios serving as the studio. Gabriela Rodriguez and Richard Schwartz will executive produce for Cuarón’s Esperanto Filmoj, while Steve Golin, David Levine and Zack Hayden will executive produce for Anonymous Content.

Ascension marks Cuarón’s second Apple TV project after his 2024 limited series Disclaimer, which starred Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline.

For Balfe, the project marks another collaboration with Apple. She will also appear in the upcoming Apple original film Tenzing. The actress is best known for playing Claire Fraser in Outlander, which concluded after eight seasons earlier this year.

Cuarón has received 11 Oscar nominations and won Best Director and Best Film Editing for Gravity before earning further acclaim for Roma.
