Everything we know about 'The Princess Diaries 3' so far

Nearly 25 years after The Princess Diaries introduced audiences to Mia Thermopolis, Disney is officially moving forward with a third instalment, with Anne Hathaway set to reprise her iconic role as the reluctant princess of Genovia.

The sequel is being directed by Adele Lim, whose previous credits include Crazy Rich Asians and Joy Ride. The screenplay is being written by Flora Greeson after an earlier script was scrapped, with Hathaway recently revealing that the creative team decided to start again in search of a stronger story. Author Meg Cabot, whose novels inspired the franchise, has praised the latest version of the script, calling it "perfect".

While Hathaway is confirmed to return as Queen Mia, no other cast members have officially signed on. However, Julie Andrews has said she has not ruled out reprising her role as Queen Clarisse, while Chris Pine, Sandra Oh, Mandy Moore, Héctor Elizondo and Robert Schwartzman have all expressed interest in returning if the story allows.

Disney has not announced a release date, and filming has yet to begin. Hathaway, who is expecting her third child, has suggested production could be delayed, although she has reassured fans that the project remains very much alive.

The original The Princess Diaries, released in 2001, became a surprise box office hit and launched Hathaway's film career, while its 2004 sequel cemented the franchise as a fan favourite. With a new creative team in place and Hathaway committed to returning, anticipation continues to build for Mia Thermopolis' long-awaited return to Genovia.
