Commuters suffer as rainwater chokes Hyd major roads

HYDERABAD:

Rainwater remained stagnant for the second consecutive day in densely populated areas and on the busiest roads of Hyderabad on Monday, throwing daily life out of gear.

Despite the rain stopping on Sunday afternoon, most streets and neighborhoods across the city continued to remain submerged. Due to alleged criminal negligence and incompetence of Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, its nine towns, and Hyderabad Water and Sanitation Corporation officials, drainage of rainwater could not be completed.

Major thoroughfares including Station Road, Goods Naka, Shah Maki Road, Railway Colony Gari Khata, Tulsi Das Road, Central Jail Road, Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar Road, Liaquat Colony, Sakhi Pir Road, Kali Mori, Faqeer Ka Par Chowk, Goushala, Noorani Basti, Phuleli and Preetabad were under water.

In Latifabad, Units 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 along with Airport Road were inundated. In Qasimabad, all internal streets of Gulistan-e-Sajjad were filled with water. Water also accumulated at Alamdar Chowk, while Phuleli Wah overflowed. Areas like Phase-1, Phase-2 and Sahrish Nagar reported several feet of standing water.

Prolonged waterlogging damaged already dilapidated roads, which caved in at several points and developed deep potholes, badly affecting traffic flow.

Citizens also faced severe difficulties in commuting. Business activities suffered as water remained in front of shops.

HESCO also failed to restore the power supply system disrupted after the rain. Electricity was restored late Sunday night in some areas, but faced continued tripping on Monday. Areas where power was restored in the morning faced the worst load-shedding as per routine.
