Paramount+ orders 'Clueless' sequel series with Alicia Silverstone returning as Cher

Production aims to begin in Los Angeles during 2027 as beloved comedy returns with fresh family storyline

Cher Horowitz is officially making her return. Paramount+ has ordered a six episode sequel series to Clueless, with Alicia Silverstone set to reprise the role that turned her into one of the defining stars of 1990s cinema. The project marks a major revival for the beloved comedy and brings the franchise back under the Paramount banner more than three decades after the original film became a cultural phenomenon.

The sequel series had previously been in development at Peacock after first being announced in 2025. However, the project was no longer moving forward there, opening the door for Paramount+ to step in. Since Clueless was originally released by Paramount Pictures in 1995, the new series will now remain within the same studio family.

According to the official logline, the story shifts to the present day and follows Cher as she navigates an entirely different stage of life. Once the effortlessly confident teenager of Beverly Hills, Cher has grown into a successful businesswoman and mother. Her greatest challenge arrives when her own daughter reaches high school, leaving Cher to realise that raising a teenager is far more complicated than she expected and making her feel "clueless" all over again.

Production is expected to begin in Los Angeles during 2027. Reports indicate the project has submitted paperwork to the California Film Commission in pursuit of state production tax incentives, reinforcing the series' commitment to filming in the city that served as the backdrop for the original film.

The creative team behind the revival includes Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage and Jordan Weiss, who are writing and executive producing the series. Schwartz and Savage will produce through their Fake Empire banner. Silverstone also joins the project as an executive producer alongside original Clueless writer and director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence. CBS Studios will produce the series.

Jane Wiseman, Head of Originals for Paramount+, described the revival as a homecoming for the franchise. She noted that Cher Horowitz captivated audiences with her style, wit and optimism when Clueless debuted in 1995 and said the streamer is proud to bring the character back while filming in Los Angeles and supporting the city's creative workforce.

The original Clueless remains one of the most influential teen comedies ever made. Loosely inspired by Jane Austen's Emma, the film transformed a classic literary story into a modern Beverly Hills comedy filled with memorable dialogue, iconic fashion and enduring pop culture moments. Alongside Silverstone, the cast featured Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, Elisa Donovan, Breckin Meyer and Dan Hedaya.

The success of the film previously inspired a television adaptation that aired from 1996 until 1999, with Rachel Blanchard portraying Cher. More recently, the original movie received further recognition when it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, highlighting its lasting cultural and historical significance.
